Keeping a promise to write a blog entry
Never one to break a promise:
I started the project by reading academic literature and an article from Teaching Geography about Young Peoples Geographies. This helped form ideas of themes we can use in the classroom; like connections between kids lives and the wider world, getting kids to investigate places important to themselves and then comparing these places with students elsewhere in the world.
These ideas turned into a hope for a project called 'Us Up North and you Down Under' where students in Rotherham and Adelaide share and compare their lives and personal geographies. The project will involve Year 9's at Wickersley and hopefully comparitive age students in an Adelaide school.
Themes for the project may include:'
Our Place' where students present their picture of Rotherham however they may choose'
Your Place' where students research Adelaide/Australia and decide what they would like to know about kids lives there, which we then hopefully find out'
Our Place' where kids investigate challenges faced by our planet at present and how they will affect themselves in future.
The hope is for kids in both countries to complete they same investigations, get us teachers to share the work and then investigate what the kids learn from each other.
Best get started then
